This gorgeous mother, medical professional, and all around badass came in studio here in Raleigh NC and rocked her session! Her infectious energy was only outshined by her super sweet personality and attitude! My clients are constantly surprising me with how genuine they are and how willing they are to be vulnerable during these intimate sessions! I love when a client does a session to celebrate herself and the woman she is becoming! Growth is so important, we change regardless of how much we want to, so it’s best to embrace it. She is so kind hearted and so sweet, so it was fun watching her come out of her shell and show off that sensual goddess she had hiding in her too!

Boudoir... I found myself repeating the word over and over again as if the definition in Websters Dictionary was going to change. I couldn't believe that I was about to do a BOUDOIR photoshoot. I felt a wave of emotions! I immediately thought to myself, "what would people say? Maybe I should hit the gym a few extra times this week... What would my mother say?!" I was nervous and excited but boudoir just felt like a "dirty" word. I researched the definition, "a French word meaning a lady's private dressing room or bedroom." Is that why it felt so dirty? Was it the word 'private' dressing room or bedroom that made it feel so risqué? Yet, when I am alone in my bedroom playing dress up in the mirror wearing my favorite lingerie or hoodie is when I feel the best, it's when I feel the sexiest, the prettiest... the most comfortable. Then it clicked! Boudoir wasn't about dressing up in sexy lingerie... It was more about feeling empowered, loving the skin that you're in, and body positivity.

This client is by far one of the most hard working and brilliant women I have ever gotten to work with. She is in the middle of a season of self discovery and self love, so to have her reach out to me to be apart of this moment with her, I jumped at the opportunity! Women, especially Women of Color battle with ideas of being “worthy” of love by fighting their natural sexual urges thanks to outside influences and societal norms. We have to be worth marrying or loving, by saying we are “pure” without needing to expect the same of our partners and counterparts. With society’s idea changing on how women’s sexual desires are accepted we get the opportunity to grow OPENLY (because we were doing this with or without acceptance) into complete human beings.

So, understandably, I was extremely nervous to strip down to almost nothing. I comforted myself knowing that this shoot was going to be a present for my husband who will be deploying in April. He knows my body. He knows my imperfections and loves me anyway. What I didn’t expect was that I would fall in love with my body, too. As women, we often neglect to love ourselves down to our bareness. We forget that in the beginning God made the woman in God’s own image and called her beautiful. We are quick to criticize our bodies and hid ourselves away.
This boudoir session showed me that my body IS beautiful. When my husband and I looked at the photos, he stopped me at the one with a perfect shot of my ass. He turned to me and said, “See? THAT is what your ass looks like. NOW, do you see how damn sexy you are?” And, I have to say YES. Yes, I do, and I love it. I love ME.

So, about a week ago I did a boudoir shoot. I was so nervous that I was trying to think of every excuse in the book of not to go to this session. A few days before, I was bitten by a swarm of red ants all over my feet, so I was like “Bitch! This is your opportunity to get out of this session!” I was also trying my hardest to lose 10 to 15 pounds in a matter of two weeks and I was driving myself crazy in the head thinking about how am I going to look once these pictures came out? What is my husband going to think when he sees these photos? Is he just going to see someone out of shape that he doesn’t feel attracted to because I’m not the same person that I was physically when I first met him. Every negative thought that you could possibly think of went through my brain. But something just came over me and said “Bitch. Get your shit together...Do the shoot, whether you like it or not. You are going to love the results.”

As an artist, you have to do things every once and awhile to keep you and your work fresh! For me that can look like buying new set pieces or creating new poses for clients, but sometimes I have to take big steps and just completely step out of my comfort zone. This time that looked like calling my bestie and muse, Kassy, and dragging her to my new bestie and hair and makeup artist house and shooting there! It was fun to play around with new lighting and challenges. The affectionately named “Chateau O’Boyle” was built in 1920 is absolutely beautiful. This old lady is being renovated by Sara of Modern Alchemy and her hubby! Though she still has some work to be done, she has some amazing features and details. #Issavibe at COB but I am here for it!

I have told the story of this brave woman to other clients as a story of encouragement. How she overcame her fear and anxiety, stepped out of her comfort zone and in front of my camera. That she was one of the most understated beauties I had ever worked with. Her glamour is effortless. Her demeanor so incredibly sweet. I am proud of all of my clients, but this one always held a special place in my heart. Her story is not mine to tell, but for her to do this session took more than most.
Back when we did this session, she didn’t want anyone to see them. She was proud but private. She never ordered an album or anything to commemorate the session, so I stored it away in hopes that I would hear from her again one day. Well that day finally came!
