If you know me personally, you know that I identify as an atheist, so when this gorgeous lady came in for her session and let Sarah and I know that she was about to be ordained as a minister, I started to panic! Did I say ANYTHING to insult this woman’s work?! Probably… haha, but the amount of strength and understanding she exudes is unreal. To hear her perspective on what this session means to her, her life, her work, and her family was everything! The separation of sex, sensuality, and religion plus the teachings against strong feminist values has always been one of my biggest frustrations with most forms of religious teachings so to see it intersect right before my eyes in such a wonderful person was so inspiring to me! In her own words…
Never in a million years did I think I would do a boudoir session. In fact, I didn’t even know what boudoir was until just a few months ago. I am so many things: a mom, a military wife, a student, a future pastor, but never SEXY, never breathtakingly beautiful, never someone that is desired.
I am in my final semester at seminary and will be ordained as a pastor within the next few months. As a clergywoman, it is your instinct to hide your woman-ness, to hide everything that makes you feminine. Each and every time you step into the pulpit, you walk into a hospital room, you sit down at your desk, you have to prove that God HAS called you and God HAS equipped you for this work, even though you are not a man. So, you pull your hair back in a tight bun, you wear shapeless dresses or formless dress pants, and sacrifice your identity for the sake of the Kingdom of God.
So, understandably, I was extremely nervous to strip down to almost nothing. I comforted myself knowing that this shoot was going to be a present for my husband who will be deploying in April. He knows my body. He knows my imperfections and loves me anyway. What I didn’t expect was that I would fall in love with my body, too. As women, we often neglect to love ourselves down to our bareness. We forget that in the beginning God made the woman in God’s own image and called her beautiful. We are quick to criticize our bodies and hid ourselves away.
